Alpha 5 map tools: quick start
Draw your first arc, try a point edit and learn when changes reach disk. Use a copy of a sector project with an existing SID or STAR for practice.
1. Choose a procedure
Open the project and Map tab. Show Airports panel, select the airport, then SID or STAR and a procedure/runway variant. Choose Fit selection.
Click a vertex to select one source row, or a segment to select its endpoints. Orange marks your selection. Double-click or use Open source to see those rows in the editor. Select a longer range there when needed.
2. Draw a practice arc
- Use Draw procedure… on the toolbar and choose Arc.
- Keep the airport as the centre, or Pick centre nearby. Leave the endpoint option unchecked.
- Enter radius 3 NM, start radial 0, end radial 90, reference True and direction Clockwise (right). These radials point outward from the centre.
- Set maximum chord error 0.01 NM, minimum segments 12, and Replace rows = 0. The default insertion position appends to the procedure.
- Choose Preview. Check the quarter-circle from north to east, both joins to the existing route, and Before/After source.
- Choose Apply to document. The editor changes; disk does not change yet.
- In the source tab, try Undo, then Redo. Use Save or Save All to keep the result. Close the drawing window before opening another tool.
3. Try the right-click menu
Select one literal point and right-click it. Choose Move point…, then Pick position, click a new location and review the preview before Apply. You can also use Drag on map in the movement window: grab the gold handle, release inside the map, then review and apply the returned proposal.
Right-clicking inside a selected range preserves the range. Named points offer explicit conversion rather than Move/Delete. Pinned references require Activate for editing. Shift+F10 opens the menu for the current selection when the map has focus.
4. Choose your next tool
| Goal | Start here |
|---|---|
| Draw an arc between selected endpoints | Right-click segment/range → drawing submenu → Endpoint arc…; supply its centre. |
| Draw a hold or procedure turn | Draw procedure… → Shape. |
| Calculate a radius from TAS and bank | Expand TAS / bank-angle turn calculator → calculate → Use radius in drawing. |
| Fit a turn to VOR radials and DME | Shape → Chart base-turn calculator. |
| Insert a point | Right-click a segment → Insert point…. |
| Reverse or resample a curve | Select its literal rows in the editor; use the range's right-click menu. |
| Copy, paste or explicitly convert named points | Coordinates... or Coordinate clipboard…. |
| Keep another procedure visible | Compare... or Pin for comparison. |
| Investigate geometry | Double-click a warning in Problems. |
Remember these three steps
Preview → Apply → Save. Review the whole route and its joins. An arrow shows coordinate order; Reverse generated sequence or Reverse selected… changes it. Input/source changes can clear a preview, so preview again when Apply is unavailable. Escape on the map cancels picking or dragging.
The tools create coordinate-based display geometry. Check your saved/exported sector in the target IVAO Aurora setup before sharing it.
